SOCIALISATION

four paws K9 training - provide quality obedience training and socialisation for your dog or pup - Problem solving puppy trainingWhy is it so important for your dog/puppy?

"Socialisation" exposes your dog to as many and varied experiences as possible in a positive manner. For example; meeting and playing with other dogs in a safe and controlled environment, bikes skateboards, wheelchairs etc..

Many believe that beacuse their dogs live with another dog that it will automatically be relaxed around all other dogs. This is not always the case.

Some dogs my show extremely fearful behaviour and aggression if not properly socialised.

Socialisation is needed to integrate your dog into society in a safe and responsible manner. Without this socialisation your dog will be fearful or stressed with day to day experiences. The subsequent stress may result in confusion or fear on the dog's behalf.

Four Paws K9 Training conducts these Socialisation classes by introducing new experiences to your dogs and pups such as agility equipment, sounds (horns or trumpets) and objects (skateboards, tyres), to your dog with heaps of positive reinforcement as your pet learns to ignore, or not to react, to these sometimes stressful situations.

The above methods combined with additional exercises have proven to be most successful when socialising dogs and/or puppies to ensure our pets achieve a well balanced and confident lifestyle.

"Dogs are born afraid of almost everything. Proper socialisation removes that fear. Without proper socialisation the fear remains, giving you a nervous, over-reactive dog."

At Four Paws K9 Training, we will expose your dog and pup to as many and varied things as possible during our Socialisation classes, to ensure that he/she is confident with them.

Some of the items we use during Socialisation:

Balloons
Bikes
Balls
Children (our own of course!)
Party Poppers
Vacuum Cleaners
Lawnmowers
Agility (tackling different heights and surfaces)
Whipper Snippers

YOUR DOG NEEDS MANY AND VARIED EXPERIENCES

Here is a of other things you should be socialising your dog and pup to:

Traffic movement and noise e.g. motorbikes.
Trips in the car
People of all ages, eg. young children.
Skateboards, Rollerblades, bikes.
Dogs, cats, horses etc.
Large crowds.
Shopping trolleys and Wheelchairs
Prams and pushers
Lawnmowers and Whipper Snipper
Vacuum cleaners and other household noises
Water - lakes, creeks, beach.

Look around you and try to see things through your dog's eyes. Don't assume your dog will automatically cope with new experiences because unless he has been socialised to unusual objects and environments he will almost certainly over-react.

Socialisation sessions are held in conjunction with each obedience level.
